William Reynolds, Ship's Captain

William Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William "Chip" Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk, NY, and is looking forward to seeing the new student crew meet the challenges this Voyage of Discovery places before them.

Kipp Van Aken

Kipp Van Aken

Kipp Van Aken is serving as the Half Moon's chief engineer. Mr. van Aken has a background in history, anthropology, and business, is a graduate of Hope College, and holds an MBA. He is a veteran of the US Navy Submarine Force and is retired from Southern California Edison's San Onofre Nuclear Station. He is a direct descendant of three early Dutch families in New York and is an original shareholder of the ship.

Brea Barthel

Brea Barthel

Brea Barthel first visited the Half Moon in 1998, with a friend who helped build the ship. She next saw it in 2001, and has volunteered ever since then. Shore duties include transcribing Juet's journal from the 1609 voyage and developing docent training documents.

Ms. Barthel teaches in the Communications Department and Education Programs at the University of Albany, and volunteers for other education-related organizations.

Ms. Barthel is on Port Watch.

Dan Barton

Dan Barton

Captain Dan Barton serves as mate and engineer. He is a licensed captain and former member of the Coast Guard who served on the Tamaroa, a ship made famous for its rescue operations during the events detailed in the book and film The Perfect Storm. He has volunteered on the Half Moon since 1994, making him the longest continuously serving volunteer in the ship's history. Mr. Barton likes to make up names for all the crew members.

Rosemary Barton

Rosemary Barton

Mrs. Rosemary Barton's culinary skills as cook on the Half Moon are beyond compare. This voyage marks her fourteenth year as the chief cook & bottle washer (not to mention crew confidante) on the Half Moon, unfailingly preparing impeccable meals for two dozen hungry crewmembers within the sharply limited time, space, and resources of a ship's galley.

Kirsten Bates

Kirsten Bates

Kirsten Bates is a video documentarian, artist, and passionate gardener. She recently moved to Athens, NY and has no intention of leaving the Hudson River Valley. She admires the spectacle of the river against the Catskill Mountains.

Ms. Bates is on Starboard Watch.

Keith Cardoza

Keith Cardoza

At age 40, Keith Cardoza has been on, in, or under water since birth! Inspired by his mentor Captain Jack Clarke, he is a licensed captain and diver. This is his third season on board the Half Moon. Mr. Cardoza first came to the Half Moon to earn sea time for his 100 ton master & sail endorsement, as well as his desire to learn old school sail techniques and navigation. During his years in the ship's crew, however, he has learned so much more.

Mr. Cardoza is Starboard Watch Leader.

David Ellis

David Ellis

David Ellis is an alumnus of the Half Moon's Voyage of Discovery program. He first sailed on the Half Moon in 2005 and has been an active volunteer ever since. Besides volunteering on the Half Moon, Mr. Ellis enjoys camping, swimming, mountain biking, and taking pictures. At Rensselaer High School, Mr. Ellis is the Editor-in-Chief of the Ramblurr, the school's monthly newspaper. In the coming fall, Mr. Ellis will be a senior in the graduating class of 2010. In the future, he plans on going to college to study journalism. Mr. Ellis is excited to have the opportunity to sail on a week-long voyage once more.

Mr. Ellis is on Port Watch.

Jeff Greenberg

Jeff Greenberg

Jeff Greenberg has returned to the Half Moon after a decade-long absence. As he stepped onto the weather deck the rich, familiar smells of the wooden ship brought back a flood of good memories, and the anticipation of new adventures.

Mr. Greenberg is on Starboard Watch.

Ewout van Grondelle

Ewout van Grondelle

Ewout van Grondelle, serving this year as the Half Moon's bosun and ship manager, first set foot on a sailing boat at age 13. He enjoyed sailing so much that he ended up 24 years later on a replica Dutch ship on the Hudson River. He went from sail instructor at sailing schools to mate and skipper on sailing barges. In the last few years he has been sailing as bosun on the bark Europa (external link) across the Atlantic ocean between Amsterdam and Antarctica.

On shore, Mr. Van Grondelle has a background in hospitality, tourism, and software engineering. He has a house in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, which he sees very little of.

Bob Hansen

Bob Hansen

Ship's mate Bob Hansen started sailing on the Hudson on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater; later, on two engineless sloops. Since the 1990s, he has served as a volunteer and mate on the schooners Spirit of Massachuesetts and Ernestina, as well as other vessels.

Having recently retired from a career as a self-styled "bureaucrat" with the New York State government, Mr. Hansen has now turned his attention to serving as second-in-command on board the Half Moon.

Lisa Johnsen

Lisa Johnsen

Lisa Johnsen is a teacher with a passion for photography. She spends her free time photographing bugs, slugs, and other tiny creatures.

Since teaching fourth grade she has developed a fascination with the Hudson River and the Half Moon. This is her first trip aboard and she is happy to be "learning the ropes!"

Ms. Johnsen is on Port Watch.

Rachel Laufer

Rachel Laufer

Rachel Laufer first became a crew member of the Half Moon as a student on the April 2000 Voyage of Discovery and has continued to work on the ship ever since. Now that she has graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in American History and therefore has a free summer, she is thrilled to again have the chance to work on the ship for the 400th anniversary schedule.

Ms. Laufer is Port Watch Leader.

John W. Mangrum

John W. Mangrum

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, the self-titled "Ship's Chronicler" oversees the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A roleplaying game designer in a past life, Mr. Mangrum is now starting his sixth year of voyages aboard the Half Moon. What started as a simple, impromptu dockside tour of the ship has since turned into a life of adventure.

Alex Padalka

Alex Padalka

Alex Padalka is a Brooklyn-based writer. His father was a sailor. His father's father was a sailor. It's only natural that Mr. Padalka would want to be a sailor... he's trying.

Mr. Padalka has returned for his second voyage on the Half Moon.

Mr. Padalka is on Starboard Watch.

Nick Reynolds

Nick Reynolds

Nick Reynolds is an alumnus of the inaugural Fresh River Voyage of Discovery, and he thinks that makes him the coolest. He just graduated from LaSalle Institute, and is going into 9th grade at Ravena Coeymans Selkirk High School.

Mr. Reynolds is on Starboard Watch.

Nora Reynolds

Nora Reynolds

Nora Reynolds is an alumna of the inaugural Fresh River Voyage of Discovery and is excited to participate in her 10th year of sailing on board the Half Moon. Besides sailing, she enjoys competitive swimming with the Delmar Dolfins and the social aspect of school.

P.S. Don't worry Mom -- no tattoos or piercings on this trip (that are permanent).

Ms. Reynolds is on Port Watch.

Evi Robinson

Evi Robinson

Evi Robinson is a student at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and a Voyage of Discovery alumna. This is her fifth trip on board the Half Moon, and she can't wait to see what happens.

Ms. Robinson is on Port Watch.

Sam Robinson

Sam Robinson

Sam Robinson comes to the Half Moon by way of his sister, Evelyn. He is a sophomore at Colgate University. He is enjoying his stay on board, and the crew has been welcoming.

Mr. Robinson is on Starboard Watch.
