Project Summary
Students: Donna, Dustin, Evelyn, Jeannine, Joseph D., and Timothy.
Senior Crew Advisor: Ellen Roth.
Project Goals: Track the rise and fall of the sun over the course of three days, marking its altitude and azimuth at the moment it reaches its zenith.
Materials: Directional compass, quadrant, watch.
Conclusion: Despite some human error early in the project as the team was familiarizing themselves with their instruments (and the unavoidable obstacle of Day Three's cloud cover), the team's data indicated that the sun had reached its zenith (and thus true noon) well after 1200 hours. In fact, they found that true noon was slightly later on the Hudson River than on Long Island Sound.
