5th Entry, 1517 Hours: Like Spuyten Duyvil Creek, the tidal strait known as Hell Gate (Hellegat in the original Dutch) takes its name from the constantly churning currents and eddies formed by the conflux of waters from the Harlem River, the East River, and Long Island Sound. These waters claimed hundreds of ships over the centuries, until the stait was finally cleared with explosives in the 19th century. While Hell Gate is no longer the navigational hazard it once once, our helmsmen certainly need to keep on their toes while passing through!
