Regular Crew
|
|
|
Captain Reynolds, whose
background includes training and work in the environmental sciences, has
been leading Voyages of Discovery aboard the Half Moon since 1998.
He resides with his family in Selkirk, NY, and considers himself very
lucky to have such a talented group of people aboard the Half Moon.
|
|
Ms.
Oosterloo hails from Aalsmeer, The Netherlands, and has extensive sailing
experience aboard historic vessels, having managed and sailed replica
ships in The Netherlands, Australia, and for many seasons the Half Moon
here in the United States.
|
|
Mr.
Woodworth, our own Renaissance Man, is a professional photographer who
also brings talents in woodwork, natural history, boat operations, and
working with youth. He lives in Schenectady, and has sailed with the Half Moon since 1999.
|
|
Mr. Wolfe,
our cook, is an Albany native, who first sailed with the Half Moon in
1999. He trained as a chef at the New Hampshire Culinary Institute,
worked in Manhattan at the Hard Rock cafe, and now works in the Albany area.
|
|
Mr.
Meilick is an engineer who first met the Half Moon during one of intensive
periods at Caddell Shipyard; we're glad he came back. He is Facilities Manager at Taconic Hills Central School
District. He recused himself from writing this caption, but
has shown great discipline and creativity in getting this web site up
daily. Mr. Meilick is an
alumnus of Camp Chingachgook, and resides with his family in Valatie.
|
|
Mr. Morel
is a sailing instructor at the Zeilschool in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands,
and came to the Half Moon to work with our Voyage of Discovery Program and
dockside sailing program during September and October of this year. He resides in Amstelveen, outside Amsterdam, where he lives aboard a traditional Dutch Luxe Motorschip
(a traditional Dutch canal boat).
|
|
Ms van den
Berg is a commercial architect who resides in Arnhem, The Netherlands. She has sailed with both modern and traditional sail vessels in the
Netherlands, and came to sail with the Half Moon in the Voyage of
Discovery. She and Mr. Zantkuijl rotate as Foremast Captain and
Foretopman on the Half Moon.
|
|
Mr.
Zantkuijl studies Aerospace Engineering at the Technical University in
Delft, where he resides. He sails both traditional and modern
sailboats in The Netherlands, and came to join the Half Moon Voyage of
Discovery. Along with his enthusiasm for sailing, Mr. Zantkuijl
brought his traditional Dutch bag pipes for our enjoyment during the
voyage.
|
|
Mr. Weisse
is a certified teacher and musician who, with his family, resides in
Schenectady. Mr. Weisse follows on the heels of Carol, his wife, and
Alex, his daughter, who have served as crewmembers of the Half Moon. Among other contributions, Mr. Weisse played the Dutch and American
national anthems at the striking of the colors, reveille and taps at waking
and bedtime, and a wide ranging medley of tunes that kept us entertained
in New York Harbor.
|
|
Ms
Farrell teaches social studies at the Rensselaer Middle High School, and
has sailed with the Half Moon Voyage of Discovery program since 2000.
She has expanded the curriculum aboard ship by developing units for the
arts and history, and secured grants to expand our equipment for studies
of weather and the environment. Ms Farrell contributed to the Half
Moon's 4th and 7th grade curriculum materials.
|
|
Ms Chermack
teaches English at Philip Livingston Magnet Academy in Albany, NY, and is
on her first Voyage of Discovery; by the look on her face you may see her
big discovery was getting aloft in the rig. She also expanded her
horizons by working with students on a range of projects from science to
history.
|
|
Mr. Terry
teaches Social Studies at Oneida Middle School in Schenectady, and brings
a great sense of enthusiasm to his second Voyage of Discovery. Mr.
Terry pitches in with everything from setting anchor, to helping students
with projects, to science and history studies, to maintenance of the
website from the ship (for which he is deeply grateful to Mr. Meilick's
presence this year).
|
|
Ms Davis
is an English teacher at Philip Livingston Magnet Academy, who is on her
fourth Voyage of Discovery since 2002. She has worked on the
expansion of the ship's curriculum in English and Language Arts, brings a great
sense of enthusiasm for her work with student sailors, and remains proud
of her qualification at going aloft in the rig.
|
|
Ms.
Fountain is aboard her first Voyage of Discovery and teaches English at Rensselaer
Middle High School. Despite her fear of heights, within a day of
boarding the Half Moon she had qualified to climb the rig, and served as a
member of the foredeck crew for sail handling. In addition to
climbing, she has been busy working with the students on their daily
journals, and on their special projects.
|
|
Mr. Prime
has thirty years experience as a historical re-enactor, and sails
extensively with the Half Moon, having spent Summers aboard since 1998.
Mr. Prime recently completed his Master's in Elementary Education, and
teaches fifth grade at Taconic Hills Elementary School. He
contributed to the Half Moon's 4th and 7th grade curriculum materials.
|
|
Mr.
Mangrum is a freelance roleplaying game designer in Albany, NY, who got his start
with the Half Moon this year by visiting for a dockside tour - and he has
been sailing and working with the ship almost continuously since. Mr. Mangrum will again help lead dockside tours while the Half Moon is in
Albany.
|
|
Mr.
Swartout, an environmental engineer, is a Section Chief in the Division of
Environmental Remediation of the New York Department of Environmental
Conservation. He is making his first Voyage of Discovery with the Half Moon. He has already helped us make a great leap forward by
bringing with him a Van Dorn sampler, which enables us to take water
samples from the bottom of the river to the top.
