William Reynolds, Ship's Captain

William Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk, NY, and is looking forward to seeing the new student crew meet the challenges this Voyage of Discovery places before them.

Deb Cowles

Deb Cowles

Deb Cowles lives in Glastonbury and has been working with students of all ages for 30+ years. Her free time is spent reading, kayaking, and in handicrafts.

Gary Coolidge

Gary Coolidge

Gary Coolidge first came to the Half Moon in 1997 through his acquaintance with longtime volunteers Dan and Rosemary Barton. He spent the year serving as a permanent crew member and weapons master, firing the ship's cannons. During his long sabbatical from the ship, he served in the Army, was stationed in Brussels for 3-1/2 years, and lived in Japan. He has returned to the Half Moon this year and spent the weeks preceding the voyage helping perform maintenance on the ship.

Gary hopes to become a teacher, and is working toward a Master's degree in Geography. He currently lives in Waverly, NY.

Julia Cosgrove

Julia Cosgrove

Julia Cosgrove is a Voyage of Discovery alumna, having sailed on board the Half Moon in 2001. She returns to the ship this summer as a sophomore at the University of Rochester. As part of a summer REC student program, she is working as a researcher for Sam Bowser's Wadsworth lab to study foraminifera in Long Island Sound.

Eileen Dulen-Jennings

Eileen Dulen-Jennings

Eileen Dulen-Jennings lives in Bolton, CT. She teaches at the Greater Hartford Academy of Math and Science and the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. She enjoys exploring, reading, and historical gardening.

Bob Hansen

Bob Hansen

Ship's mate Bob Hansen has been sailing since 1965 and has sailed extensively on Long Island Sound, the Hudson, and beyond. In addition to his own boats he has served as crew, watch officer, and mate on the sloop Clearwater, lightship Nantucket, and schooners Spirit of Massachuesetts and Ernestina.

When not sailing on the Half Moon, Bob will be preparing his ketch Neptune's Car for ocean voyages.

Mary Ellen Jacobs

Mary Ellen Jacobs

Mary Ellen Jacobs has an undergraduate degree in history and a Ph.D. in molecular biology & biochemistry. She is currently a researcher at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT. She is serving as science officer on this Voyage of Discovery, during which she hopes to introduce students to the biology of the Hudson River, as well as the history of the Henry Hudson & his crew on their 1609 voyage along the river that would bear his name.

John W. Mangrum

John W. Mangrum

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, he oversees the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A roleplaying game designer in a past life, John is now in his fifth year of voyages aboard the Half Moon.

Just a few days before the students boarded for this Voyage of Discovery, John became an uncle! He would like to welcome his nephew Baxter to the family.

Steve McLaughlin

Steve McLaughlin

Steve McLaughlin loves to cook and has wanted to crew on the Half Moon since his daughter sailed on a Voyage of Discovery four years ago. Recently retired from the N.Y.S. Department of Health, Steve jumped at the opportunity when he heard that a cook was needed for this voyage.

Sarah Read

Sarah Read

Sarah has been an active member of the Half Moon since 1999. She is an alumna of that year's infamous Voyage of Discovery, when the Half Moon and her crew faced down Hurricane Floyd. The ship lost two anchors, but otherwise both it and its crew emerged unscathed.

Sarah has recently graduated from Emerson College, and returns to the ship this year as bosun's mate.

Jennifer Reilly

Jennifer Reilly

Jennifer Reilly is a future middle school science teacher whose early Half Moon voyages prepared her for work as a professional rigger on ships for Hollywood. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and her son, the cutest baby in the world.

Jurgen Schuijer

Jurgen Schuijer

Jurgen Schuijer is 30 and lives in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands. He will be serving on board as the Half Moon for the season. Mr. Schuijer became familiar with the Half Moon via contacts at the Enhuizen zeevaart school. In the last three years, he has combined working for a bank with sailing the Stevenaak Helena from Rotterdam. The Helena was built in 1875 and is the oldest iron sailing freighter in the Netherlands. Mr. Schuijer is licensed to serve as first mate on all sailing vessels worldwide.

Bob Wardwell

Bob Wardwell

Bob Wardwell, 55, is the ship's engineer and science officer. He has been married to Regina Kirwan since 1975. They have two children: Ben, 30, and Eric, 26. Eric married Melissa Locke in May 2007 and they are expecting their first child in October 2008. In September 2007, Bob retired after 34 years of government service. He now lives in Black Mountain, NC.

We would also like to thank Ann Cosgrove, Jay Pocius, and Chris Palmerie for stopping by and helping us prepare for our departure from New London.
