William Reynolds, Ship's Captain

William Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk, NY, and is looking forward to seeing the new student crew meet the challenges this Voyage of Discovery places before them.

Kipp Van Aken

Kipp van Aken

Kipp van Aken is serving as the Half Moon's chief engineer. Mr. van Aken has a background in history, anthropology, and business, is a graduate of Hope College, and holds an MBA. He is a veteran of the US Navy Submarine Force and is retired from Southern California Edison's San Onofre Nuclear Station. He is a direct descendant of three early Dutch families in New York and is an original shareholder of the ship.

Ned Chalker

Ned Chalker

Mate Ned Chalker served as the captain of the Mabel Stevens from 1974-2007. He has been a member of the Potomac River Pilots Association since 1980, a member of the National Maritime Heritage Foundation since 2000, and was a member of the board of the American Sail Training Association from 1980-1992. Mr. Chalker came to know the Half Moon in 1995 when the ship came to Washington, DC, and has known Captain Reynolds since the latter took command of the Half Moon.

Hidzer Gorter

Hidzer Gorter

Hidzer Gorter is the chef on the Half Moon for this Voyage of Discovery. Two days before Jurgen Schuijer left for this trip, he gave Mr. Gorter a call -- the ship needed a cook! Thus, preparation was fast, fast, fast, and fast. But he likes it very much, and has been dazzling the crew with his menus.

Bob Hansen

Bob Hansen

Ship's mate Bob Hansen started sailing on the Hudson on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater; later, on two engineless sloops. Since the 1990s, he has served as a volunteer and mate on the schooners Spirit of Massachuesetts and Ernestina.

When not sailing, he describes himself as a "bureaucrat" with the New York State government.

Mary Ellen Jacobs

Mary Ellen Jacobs

Mary Ellen Jacobs has an undergraduate degree in history and a Ph.D. in molecular biology & biochemistry. She is currently a researcher at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT. She is serving as science officer on this Voyage of Discovery, during which she hopes to introduce students to the biology of the Hudson River, as well as the history of the Henry Hudson & his crew on their 1609 voyage along the river that would bear his name.

Steve Linehan

Steve Linehan

Steve Linehan is a Social Studies teacher for grades 7-8 at Philip Livingston Magnet Academy. This is his 26th year working in the Albany City School District. Mr. Linehan is the developer of our 7th-grade curriculum, and has been sailing with the Half Moon since the inception of the Voyage of Discovery project in 1998.

Virginia Mahigian

Virginia Mahigian

Virginia Mahigian teaches the 7th and 8th graders at Rensselaer Middle School. She has been sailing with the Half Moon since 2000. This is her eighth Voyage of Discovery, and she looks forward to another wonderful adventure.

John W. Mangrum

John W. Mangrum

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, he oversees the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A roleplaying game designer in a past life, Mr. Mangrum is now concluding his fifth year of voyages aboard the Half Moon. What started as a simple, impromptu dockside tour of the ship has since turned into a life of adventure.

Ned Moore

Ned Moore

Ned Moore is a former New Yorker who now resides in the Berkshires in Lee, MA. A former Army aviation officier, he was introduced to sailing in Panama in 1986. He started sailing for real on contemporary and traditional vessels in 1995. Since then, he has chartered and delivered boats back and forth up the East Coast: Florida to New York (and vice versa), New York to Bermuda, Costa Rice to the Panama Canal, and Panama to Maine. Mr. Moore served as volunteer crew on the schooner Pioneer, of the South Street Seaport Museum, from 1995-1997. He also served as volunteer crew on the Kalmar Kyckel 1998-2002, acting as 2nd mate during the 2002 season.

Henk Morel

Henk Morel

Henk Morel has been a sailing instructor and has organized sailing camps all of his life, usually working with small open boats. His interests include classic sailing, restoration of old ships, and old-fashioned nautical skills. Besides this, he was worked for the Dutch government in location managing and also as a teacher in several practical technologies. This is Mr. Morel's first time sailing aboard a tall ship. He is pleased to be here, as it fulfills a dream. He hopes to have a good time with the American youths, to help overall, and to demonstrate some ropeworks and sailmaking.

Mark Morel

Mark Morel

Mark Morel hails from the Netherlands, where he lives on a houseboat in Amstelveen, near Amsterdam. He works as an instructor at a sailing school, where they teach sailing to students of all ages. After intitally joining us for numerous voyages in 2004, Mr. Morel is now returning for his fourth year on board the Half Moon. He considers this an expression of how much he likes being here and working with a student crew.

Jurgen Schuijer

Jurgen Schuijer

Jurgen Schuijer is 29 and lives in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands. He will be serving on board as the Half Moon for the season. Mr. Schuijer became familiar with the Half Moon via contacts at the Enhuizen zeevaart school. In the last three years, he has combined working for a bank with sailing the Stevenaak Helena from Rotterdam. The Helena was built in 1875 and is the oldest iron sailing freighter in the Netherlands. Mr. Schuijer is licensed to serve as first mate on all sailing vessels worldwide.
