River Science: Wildlife

Although none of our students are specifically studying the river ecology on this Voyage of Discovery, the Half Moon still provides us with an excellent vantage point to examine the flora and fauna of the Hudson River Valley.

During research layovers, we take groups of students out on Zodiac expeditions to explore the nearby wetlands and search for specimens of native plant and animal life to study.

During our Zodiac expeditions, we collected several plant specimens, as well as a tiny painted turtle spotted swimming across Murderer's Creek, a small wetland area immediately north of our moorage in Athens Creek.

We also caught this little flounder just off the side of the ship. The fish was in obvious distress, simply floating past. Flounders are bottom-dwelling, saltwater fish, and so we can only speculate as to how it wound up on the surface, so far upriver in fresh waters.

Although the fish appeared to be near death, Dr. Jacobs poured the Bay Ridge Flats water sample from our salinity tests into its bucket, and the increased salt levels seemed to revive it.
