River Science: Cloud Cover

As a component of the Half Moon's Deck Log and AMVER SEAS observations, students are encouraged to observe the cloud cover above us — which often varies wildly over the course of a given Voyage of Discovery.

Students learn how to determine the percentage of cloud cover in the sky, and how to identify distinct cloud formations, such as curling cirrus clouds, flat stratus clouds, or puffy cumulus clouds.

Throughout most of this leg of the voyage we experienced overcast skies of various density, as you can see. Fortunately, the skies cleared during Day Three, granting the celestial tracking team a window in which to collect their data.
