River Science: Natural Wildlife

Although none of our students are specifically studying the river ecology on this Voyage of Discovery, the Half Moon still provides us with an excellent vantage point to examine the flora and fauna of the Hudson River Valley.

During research layovers, we take groups of students out on Zodiac expeditions to explore the nearby wetlands and search for specimens of native plant and animal life to study.

On this leg of the voyage, our Zodiac expeditions explored Piermont Marsh, a protected wetland just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Mr. Woodworth and the students collected a range of flora and fauna, including live barnacles, tiny green crabs and mud crabs, amphipods, softshell clams, a blood worm (neries), grass shrimp, Atlantic silverside fish, Atlantic slipper shell, and common reed grass.
