Meet the Crew

William Reynolds, Ship's Captain

William Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk.

Kipp van Aken

Kipp van Aken

Kipp van Aken is serving as the Half Moon's chief engineer. Mr. Van Aken has a background in history, anthropology, and business, is a graduate of Hope College, and holds an MBA. He is a veteran of the US Navy Submarine Force and is retired from Southern California Edison's San Onofre Nuclear Station. He is a direct descendant of three early Dutch families in New York and is an original shareholder of the ship.

Eduard van Breen

Eduard van Breen

Ever since he was a Dutch boy, Eduard van Breen read of the heroics of his nation's 17th century VOC. Maritime history and sailing have been his passion. A professional career on four continents allowed him to sail many of the world's seas and many that carried the original d'Halve Maen from Texel to Jacarta. He is determined to plot the entire course of the original Halve Maen. What a keel! And how great it is that we can experience her character today through the prism of time!

Pauli Dangerousli

Pauli Dangerousli

This is Pauli Dangerousli's fourth year with the Half Moon. He accounts himself a sailor, a musician, a healer, and a philosopher.

Steve Eftimiades

Steve Eftimiades

Steve Eftimiades is caretaker of the Queens County Farm Museum. He has sailed on the HMS Rose, the Maryland Dove, and the USS Constellation. He is semi-retired, and currently manager of his own real estate. He also builds period furniture, mostly for museums.

David Ellis

David Ellis
Fall 2005 Voyage of Discovery Alumnus

David Ellis is an alumus of the Voyage of Discovery program. He first sails on the Half Moon in 2005 and has been an active volunteer ever since. Besides volunteering on the Half Moon, Mr. Ellis enjoys camping, swimming, mountain biking, and taking pictures. He is currently completing his second semester at Hudson Valley Community College, where he is studying Broadcast Communications. In the fall, Mr. Ellis will be studying Television Production at the New School of Radio & Television. At Hudson Valley, he is a staff writer on the student newspaper, The Hudsonian. Mr. Ellis is excited to have the opportunity to sail on a voyage once more.

Bob Hansen

Bob Hansen

Ship's mate Bob Hansen started sailing on the Hudson on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater; later, on two engineless sloops. Since the 1990s, he has served as a volunteer and mate on the schooners Spirit of Massachuesetts and Ernestina, as well as other vessels.

Having recently retired from a career as a self-styled "bureaucrat" with the New York State government, Mr. Hansen has now turned his attention to serving as second-in-command on board the Half Moon.

Heather Henderson

Heather Henderson

Heather Henderson has been an occasional volunteer aboard the Half Moon for the past five years. When not sailing, she homeschools her three sons in New York City.

Roger Herzhauser

Roger Herzhauser

In recent years, Roger Herzhauser was drawn first to kayaks, then to the Hudson River, native history, Dutch history, and now the Half Moon. He has had many occupations and completed many and varied courses and degrees. Currently he is occupied fishing, video recording the river and its environs and, as always, pursuing philosohpy.

Alyson Kelly

Alyson Kelly

Alyson is a graduate of Fordham University. She is currently completing coursework toward a Masters of Public Health in Nutrition and becoming a registered dietician. She's excited to be on her first voyage on the Half Moon.

Lenny Kluz

Lenny Kluz

Lenny Kluz is Assistant Director at NYS Vital Records, and a part-time volunteer sailor who enjoys the ship and diverse crew. The Half Moon is a wonderful adventure and a great challenge. Everybody needs to get out on the treasure that is the Hudson River. "Sure beats the heck out of my beat-up motorboat."

Rachel Laufer

Rachel Laufer
2000 Spring Voyage of Discovery Alumna

Rachel Laufer first came to the Half Moon as a docent in 1999, then joined the crew as a student on the April 2000 Voyage of Discovery; she has continued to work on the ship ever since. Now she has graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in American History and is about to begin a doctorate of physical therapy progam, so is sad to (temporarily) leave.

Doug Lyke

Doug Lyke

Doug Lyke lives in Poughkeepsie and works at Dutchess County Community College as an A/V Technician. He first came on board in 2009 during the River Week voyage. His wife asked him to search the Half Moon's website to see when tours were being held during its stay in Poughkeepsie a few weeks before River Week. While searching, he saw where to click to volunteer. The next thing he knew, he was climbing aboard the Half Moon in the middle of the night at Piermont!

John W. Mangrum

John W. Mangrum

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, the self-titled "Ship's Chronicler" oversees the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A roleplaying game designer in a past life, Mr. Mangrum has been sailing on board the Half Moon since the summer of 2004. What started as a simple, impromptu dockside tour of the ship has since turned into a life of adventure.

Jason McLeod

Jason McLeod
2009 Masters Voyage of Discovery Alumnus

Jason McLeod is a student at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. He has returned several times to sail with the Half Moon since his first time on board as a student sailor in 2009.

Carolyn Niehaus

Carolyn Niehaus
2000 Fall Voyage of Discovery Alumna

Carolyn Niehaus has been an active member of the Half Moon since 1999 when she started giving tours as a docent through her social studies class. Ms. Niehaus is an alumna of the Fall 2000 Voyage of Discovery, as well as other voyages, and is happy to be back with the New Netherland Museum.

Grant Prime

Grant Prime

Grant Prime teaches 5th grade at Taconic Hills Middle School. Mr. Prime has been involved with historical re-enactments for more than thirty years, and has been bringing his enthusiasm to the Half Moon each summer since 1998. He has completed his Master's in Elementary Education, and was a contributor to the New Netherland Museum's 4th- and 7th-grade curriculum materials.

Mimi Prime

Mimi Prime

Mimi Prime came to America in 1995, intending to stay for one year. There she met Mr. Prime, who got her interested in the Half Moon. She worked with special needs children for 16 years and switched careers to respiratory therapy in 2007.

Evi Robinson

2008 Masters Voyage of Discovery Alumna

Evi Robinson is a student at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She has continued to sail on the Half Moon regularly since her first voyage as a student crew member.

Frank Rodriques

Frank Rodriques

Frank Rodriques is our usual ship's gunner. He is a resident of New Bedford, MA with a deep interest in sailing and the maritime arts. This, combined with his study of the material culture of the 17th and 18th centuries makes volunteering on the Halve Maen a natural choice.

Alexander Sharpe

Alexander Sharpe

Alexander Sharpe is a student from NYC. His main interests are sailing and photography. He has sailed on a variety of vessels, including the barque Europa and the schooner Pioneer. He also enjoys traveling and playing guitar.

Bonnie Talluto

Bonnie Talluto

Bonnie Talluto is a reading specialist, amateur photographer, and bird owner and watcher. She loves the majesty of the Hudson River. She considers it a very special treat to be able to sail aboard the Replica Ship Half Moon in the middle of the Hudson.

Greg Weiss

Greg Weiss

Greg Weiss first sailed on the Half Moon in September 1996. He is a planker, topman, galley slave, and mate.

Gale Whitbeck

Gale Whitbeck

Gale Whitbeck is an educator of Dutch/Mohawk descent. She presents programs to school groups on the native perspective of the colonization of the Americas.

James Whitbeck

James Whitbeck

James Whitbeck is an artist from western Massachusetts. He has a great interest in 17th century Dutch history, especially for New Netherland, so he is looking forward to his second voyage on the Half Moon.

James is on Port Watch.

Our dockside assistants on this voyage gave their time in Verplanck to help prepare the ship for its new season.

William J. Gordon

William J. Gordon

William J. Gordon is the great grandson of two 19th century sea captains and he cannot swim.

Before volunteering on the Half Moon in 2010, the only time he had sailed was in the lagoon at Abidjan in the Ivory Coast.

He is a lifelong New Yorker with a passion for local history.

Peter Lemme

Peter Lemme, 59, lives in Guilderland, NY and works as a manager with the New York Indepdendent System Operator. Mr. Lemme has been boating on the lakes and rivers of New York for over 40 years, and is thrilled to have the opportunity to sail on the Half Moon and expand his seamanship.

Steve McLaughlin

Steve McLaughlin loves to cook and has wanted to crew on the Half Moon since his daughter sailed on a Voyage of Discovery seven years ago. He has recently retired from the N.Y.S. Department of Health.

Roberta ReadJim Read

Jim & Roberta Read

Jim and Roberta Read are longtime Half Moon volunteers and also the parents of Sarah Read, a Voyage of Discovery alumna who joined us as a member of the senior crew throughout the Half Moon's 2008 summer season.

Sean Shoemaker

Sean Shoemaker

Ahaj! Sean Shoemaker is an intern with the New Netherland Museum. He is currently in pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Journalism at SUNY Albany. His interests include music, photography, video, soccer, and long walks on the beach.

Dave Wilber

Dave Wilber is from Vischer Ferry, NY. A business analyst in the power industry, Mr. Wilber is an avid downhill skier in winter. He builds cedar strip canoes that he paddles and sometimes sails on the many Adirondack Lakes.

Woody Woodworth

Woody Woodworth

Woody Woodworth has a home in Schenectady, NY. He has worked as a professional photographer for three decades. He joined the Half Moon in 1998 and is best known for keeping the ship's head working.
