Building the Beak

Marcel at the Worksite

The first step was setting up a worksite. We had to arrange a setting for everything, and relied heavily on our friends in the area to loan equipment and workspace.

The planking for the beak moves forward

Erik Slagmoolen and Marcel Plasmeijer, shipwrights from the Netherlands, made quick work of setting up the initial planking for the beak. This shows the status after three days of woodwork.

Knee on the Beak

The beak is strengthened by the addition of a knee underneath. This makes it more accurate historically, and stronger.

Here, Marcel demonstrates how well sailors will fit in the new beak after it is complete.
