Setting Up the Ship

Planning the Work

Captain Reynolds, Janine Oosterloo, Erik Slagmoolen, and Marcel Plasmeijer discuss the demolition of the beak and initial construction.

After the side planking for the beak had been removed, we needed to set the staging (platforms) for the rebuilding process.  Yes, it was rainy and windy.  What else would we expect?

Janine Oosterloo loves her work.  She used a sawsall to remove the old planking, and here is just reassuring our Lion that he will not suffer the same fate.

This is a closeup of the stem; anyone who has wrestled with the spritsail will appreciate the added roominess found here.  The stem and the beak are in good shape, but we will remove the strongback in order to install new frames and side planking.

We needed a sky hook to rig a support for the scaffolding, but Janine had a better idea. While we are using some modern materials, everything we are doing would have been done in a similar manner on the East India Company docks of Amsterdam in 1609.
