Officers & Senior Crew

Captain William Reynolds, ship's captainWilliam Reynolds: Ship's Captain

Captain William Reynolds has been captain of the Half Moon and Director of the New Netherland Museum since 1998. Before coming to the Half Moon, he captained numerous seagoing vessels, both historical and industrial. His background also includes training and work in the environmental sciences. He currently lives with his family in Selkirk, NY, and is looking forward to seeing the new student crew meet the challenges this Voyage of Discovery places before them.

Captain Dan Barton, mateDan Barton: Mate

Captain Dan Barton serves as first mate and engineer. He is a licensed captain and former member of the Coast Guard who served on the Tamaroa, a ship made famous for its rescue operations during the events detailed in the book and film The Perfect Storm. He has volunteered on the Half Moon since 1994, making him the longest continuously serving volunteer in the ship's history. Mr. Barton likes to make up names for all the crew members.

Captain Rudi Vos, mateRudi Vos: Mate

A Netherlands native, Captain Rudi Vos went straight from high school into Nautical College. He graduated in 1988, serving as a mate and engineer on coastal trade, and in 1992 became Maritime Officer (foreign trade) in Amsterdam. For five years, he worked with a heavy lift company from Rotterdam . In 1998 he started to work on a contract basis for several cruising agencies. In 2001, he became a Master of all ships, and has been sailing as a Master ever since. From 2002 till the summer of 2005 he spent his time ashore as a teacher at the nautical college and as a high school science teacher. In February/March 2006, he followed a course for serving as a mate on tall ships. This trip with the Half Moon will give him some practice.

Robert Wardwell, engineerRobert Wardwell: Engineer/Science Officer

Bob Wardwell, 53, is the ship's engineer and science officer. He has been married to Regina Kirwan since 1975. They have two children: Ben, 28, and Eric, 24. When not sailing on the Half Moon, he works as a Natural Resource Manager for the U.S. Army.

Mark Morel, boatswainMark Morel: Boatswain

Mark Morel hails from the Netherlands, where he lives on a houseboat in Amstelveen, near Amsterdam. He works as an instructor at a sailing school, where they teach sailing to students of all ages. After joining us for our fall Voyage of Discovery and History Channel voyages in 2004, Mr. Morel has returned this year to live and work on the Half Moon for another three months. He considers this an expression of how much he likes being here and working with a student crew.

Sky Colley, ship's carpenterSky Colley: Ship's Carpenter

Sky Colley has worked on the Half Moon for three years. He enjoys working with wood, but likes to sail even more!

Rosemary Barton, ship's cookRosemary Barton: Ship's Cook

Mrs. Rosemary Barton's culinary skills as cook on the Half Moon are beyond compare. She has been the chief cook & bottle washer (not to mention crew confidante) on the Half Moon for eleven years, unfailingly preparing impeccable meals for two dozen hungry crewmembers within the sharply limited time, space, and resources of a ship's galley.

Kara ColleyKara Colley

Kara Colley just returned from a five-month bike trip in Mexico with her husband Sky. Though currently happily unemployed, she usually works as a math teacher.

John W. MangrumJohn W. Mangrum

Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, John W. Mangrum holds one of the most anachronistic positions the crew of a 17th-century wooden sailing ship could imagine: the Half Moon's webmaster. Seldom seen in front of the camera, he oversees the daily updates to this website during our voyages. A former roleplaying game designer, John is now enjoying his third year of voyages aboard the Half Moon. What started as a simple, impromptu dockside tour of the ship has since turned into a life of adventure.

Sarah ReadSarah Read

Sarah has been an active member of the Half Moon since 1999. She is an alumnus of that year's infamous Voyage of Discovery, when the Half Moon and her crew faced down Hurricane Floyd. The ship lost twos anchor, but otherwise both it and its crew emerged unscathed.

Following her summer on board, Sarah will return to Emerson College for her junior year.

Special Thanks

Larry FingarKipp van AkenWoody Woodworth

Although they are not joining us as crew members on this Voyage of Discovery, this project would not be possible were it not for the extensive, voluntary efforts of (left to right) Larry Fingar, Kipp van Aken, and Woody Woodworth. Not only have these men been longtime friends of the Half Moon, they have spent most of the past two months personally installing most of the new structural improvements to the ship.

An additional note of thanks goes to the father of Michael Doctor, father of one of our Union crew members, who came to the ship intending to simply drop off his son, but was then generous enough to drive a few of our senior crew into town for some last-minute errands.
